Hair & Scalp Care Therapy: Hair Scalp Treatment Aftercare for the First 72 Hours

By Santhigram Wellness | October 9, 2026

Quick reminder: Hair & Scalp Care Therapy is a 60-minute session ($175) that blends Shirodhara and Shiro Abhyangam to nourish the roots and support concerns like hair thinning, premature graying, and balding.

Hair & Scalp Care Therapy: First 72 Hours Aftercare image

One of the most meaningful stories I’ve heard at Santhigram Wellness came from someone who traveled from New York after losing hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes to alopecia areata, and who felt an immediate sense of trust and connection in our care. For your hair scalp treatment results, the single most important rule in the first 72 hours is this: keep your scalp calm. That means no early washing, no heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours, and no heat or chemical services for at least a week.

I’m writing this for real life in Jersey City, not a perfect schedule. If you’re commuting through Journal Square, trying to get to work, or squeezing self-care in between responsibilities, this timeline keeps aftercare low-effort and very clear.

First 24 to 48 hours: protect the scalp treatment area like it’s “fresh”

If you only remember one thing: I generally recommend you avoid washing your hair, heavy sweating, and vigorous rubbing for the first 24 to 48 hours after Hair & Scalp Care Therapy.

Do this

  • Keep your hands off your scalp. If you catch yourself touching out of habit, that’s normal. Just reset.
  • Sleep with your head comfortable and supported. If you move a lot at night, a soft towel over the pillow can help keep things clean without adding pressure.
  • If you step outside in Journal Square wind or cool fall weather, protect your head lightly. Think breathable and loose, not tight and compressive.

Skip this

  • Water and steam on the scalp early on. Hot showers that soak the scalp, steam rooms, and very hot baths tend to increase redness and sensitivity.
  • Heavy sweat for 24 to 48 hours. If you must move your body, keep it low-sweat. A gentle walk beats a high-intensity class.
  • Tight hats, helmets, and snug headwraps. Jersey City summers can be humid, but tight headwear traps heat and friction.

This is the same basic reason that strong follow-through matters in longer programs too. I’ve seen people do best when they actually stick to the recommendations. One long-time client told us, “I followed all her recommendations and completed panchakarma treatments, ” and later shared she regained 100% hair growth over time. Your plan may look different, but the pattern is the same: consistency beats intensity.

Days 3 to 7: gentle cleansing, no heat styling, no color services

Once you’re past the first 48 hours, most people want to get back to normal fast. I get it. But this is the window where over-doing products and heat can undo the calm state you just created.

Rule of thumb for week one: keep everything mild. Mild shampoo. Mild water temperature. Mild styling.

Washing plan (typical)

I generally suggest waiting 24 to 48 hours to wash your hair, then keeping washes gentle and not too frequent for the rest of the week. Use lukewarm water. Keep your fingertips soft, no aggressive scrubbing. Pat dry instead of rubbing hard with a towel.

What to avoid for at least a week

  • Blow dryers on hot, flat irons, curling irons, or any heat that makes your scalp feel warm.
  • Hair color, bleach, keratin, relaxers, perms, or chemical scalp products unless I’ve cleared it with you.
  • Picking at dry skin or flakes. If your scalp feels dry, I’d rather you soften it with a gentle routine than scratch it off.

And water matters beyond the shower. I recommend skipping pools, hot tubs, and ocean water for 7 to 14 days. Chlorine and salt are rough on healing, easily irritated skin.

Products and habits that keep hair and scalp treatment results steady

I keep aftercare simple on purpose. You do not need a shelf full of products after a scalp treatment hair session. You need the right few things, used consistently.

Shampoo: pH-balanced and fragrance-light

Week one is not the time for “strong” clarifying shampoos, heavy medicated washes, or anything that leaves your scalp feeling squeaky. Gentle cleansing supports the work we did during Shirodhara and Shiro Abhyangam.

Topicals: only what I’ve recommended

If you use minoxidil or other scalp serums, pause until I tell you it’s safe to restart. Mixing actives too soon can cause irritation and makes it hard to know what your scalp is reacting to.

Daily habit: protect your scalp on commute days

If you’re walking to the PATH in summer humidity or winter wind, keep sun and friction in mind. A loose, breathable hat is fine. Tight hats and itchy fabrics are not. Jersey City weather changes fast. Dress for comfort, not compression.

When to reach out (and how fast I want to hear from you)

Most aftercare questions are small, and I’d rather answer them early than have you worry through your workday. We’re steps from the Journal Square PATH, so a lot of people coming from Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, Bayonne, North Bergen, and NYC fit follow-ups around commuting.

“Within just two weeks of medications and therapies, my brain fog lifted, and I finally began to feel mentally clear, calm, and grounded again.”

one of our regulars

Normal, common, usually short-lived

  • Mild redness or tenderness that settles down over 24 to 72 hours.
  • A “warm” or slightly sensitive scalp if you went back to heat, hats, or workouts too quickly.

Reach out promptly if you notice

  • Increasing pain instead of improvement.
  • Spreading redness, swelling, fever, or unusual discharge.
  • Any reaction that feels “off” after restarting products.

If you’re dealing with flaking or itchiness and want to plan your next step, I also wrote a practical guide on itchy, flaky scalp and Hair & Scalp Care Therapy. When you’re ready, I’m happy to help you time your next visit so it doesn’t disrupt work or weekend plans.

Local note: If you searched “massage near me, ” “massage spa near me, ” or “ayuverda clinic near me” and landed here, you’re in the right place if you want scalp-focused care in a body wellness center setting. I work with people who want ayurvedic support, and I’m also honest about pacing, follow-through, and what to avoid so you don’t waste your session.
